As part of efforts to strengthen international research networks and enhance global academic reputation, Dicky Harwanto, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), conducted a Visiting Researcher program at the Foodtech Laboratory, Department of Seafood Science and Technology, Gyeongsang National University (GNU), Tongyeong, Republic of Korea.
The visiting research activity took place from 18 September to 3 October 2025, following an official invitation from Prof. Jae-Suk Choi, a prominent professor and researcher in the field of seafood science and technology at GNU. This program was part of an International Research Collaboration initiative and represents a strategic step toward establishing academic partnerships between two leading institutions in East and Southeast Asia.
During the visit, Dr. Dicky Harwanto was involved in collaborative research focusing on the toxicity of seaweeds toward several aquatic organism species. The study aimed to explore the potential bioactive compounds in seaweeds that play a role in natural defense mechanisms against predators or nuisance organisms, as well as their implications for seafood safety.
In addition to laboratory-based research activities, Dr. Dicky Harwanto actively participated in academic discussions, internal seminars, and the development of future joint research plans with the GNU research team. One of the key outcomes of this visit was the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between the Department of Aquaculture, Undip, and the Foodtech Laboratory, GNU, marking the formal initiation of collaboration in research, lecturer and student exchanges, and joint scientific publications.
This collaboration represents an important initial step in advancing aquaculture and biotechnology research at Undip. The program is expected not only to produce internationally reputable scientific publications but also to open opportunities for future multidisciplinary collaborations, particularly in the areas of marine bioresource management, seafood safety, and the development of environmentally friendly fisheries-derived products.
FPIK Undip is committed to continuously supporting its lecturers and researchers in establishing collaborations with leading research institutions worldwide. Activities such as this represent Undip’s tangible contribution to strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global research arena, while simultaneously supporting the university’s vision of becoming a World Class University.
